backgrounder

juvenis.org is a new kind of non-profit organization. It is run by youth (16-21) and will serve US Latino youth (12-25). The idea for this organization stems from several trends noticed in American society:
The emergence of Latinos as the largest minority in the United States.
The notable lack of civic participation among Latinos at the local, state and national level as demonstrated by the low numbers of Latino politicians and the low levels of community service engagement among Latino youth.
The high penetration of broadband Internet into American households, schools, libraries and community centers.

With these trends in mind, the juvenis.org’s mission is to utilize cutting-edge Internet technology to lead in the redefinition of the external and internal outlook of Latino youth as a powerful contribution to American civic life. Specifically, our vision is:
To elevate and empower US Latino youth to actively and positively participate in civic life.
To provide a voice of hope, positive reinforcement and value driven opportunities for US Latino youth.
To maximize the power of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) towards the development of individuals and groups.

To meet these mission objectives, juvenis.org will employ new Internet technologies to provide Latino youth with an interactive website that will:
Organize local community organizations that serve US Latino youth to be engaged in American civic life by regions of the country.
Provide an information portal on issues that address the most immediate civic interests of Latino youth with expert moderators.
Facilitate a mentorship network between Latino leaders and youth.
Provide knowledge management tools for Latino youth to engage in civic life, either by participating in or starting projects, interest groups, events, internships and scholastic opportunities.
Stimulate a broader discussion among US Latino youth about their participatory role in American civic life.
Link to a global youth portal like TakingITGlobal to provide access to international opportunities for US Latino youth. This would also afford young people based in other regions a unique insight into Latino youth life in the US.

Guarany
Related to country: Portugal

Everybody has their special place, and I think I have found my own. Cafe Guarany is a cafe/restaurant in the centre of Porto - it is a place like no other I have ever had the pleasure to visit. Guarany was founded in 1933, and has earned the nickname 'the musicians cafe'; it is a melting pot of culture and one can feel the culture pumping through it's veins. When I sit there, I can see that I am surrounded by amazing people - artists, musicians, politicians, mostly leaders in their own rights. I feel myself there no matter how I look or feel - it seems special yet un-presumptuous. I will fit in there whether I'm working away on my iBook while sipping a 'meia de leite' (half-of-milk - a Portuguese coffee drink) in a t-shirt and jeans, or reading The Economist in a shirt and shoes. I wish I could find such a place in London, but I know I will never feel at home there as I do here. I can sit for hours on end staring around the room from the edge, as if I'm looking into a looking glass, imagining who is who and why they are there.

Guarany is an inspirational place, the epitome of an inspirational Porto. This city inspires me no-end; I feel like an artist here; I feel like this city will make a long and lasting impression on me. Europe is so vibrant and colourful, as I'm sure is the rest of the world - I thank God that I have the wonderful privilege to live in such an amazing part of the world.

Come to London

This week Nick Moraitis was in London. It was a cool week, although the rail workers union called for a strike on the day of my event - which forced us to postpone! Never mind as it will be held in October instead (http://www.fcoyouthforum.org.uk). It was cool to see Nick, and we hung out a few times - in fact Nick and I, Tim, Camilla and Liliana were enjoying the delights of London until 4am on Wednesday morning. We went to an arab cafe on Edgeware Road (BIG arab district) and ended up paying £30 ($80ca) for arab sweets (Baklawa) and tea for five (£12.50 for a pot of tea!!!).

Today I'm hoping to see Terri Willard who is also in London. Amazingly, for years nobody from TIG comes to London and in two weeks, Alex, Nick & Terri were all here.
